Roughly 140 riders showed up in Tamaqua, PA this past weekend for RORR’s first TOUGH Like RORR event, an event showcasing PA’s best technical ,tight, rocky, and snotty terrain.Led by RORR’s Rob Mohn as trailboss, the technical trail put in place was surely going to be a challenge. Among the many entries were Rockstar Factory Husqvarna’s Mike Brown, Beta USA’s Cory Buttrick and Jesse Groemm, Craig DeLong, Tegan Temple, Ben Kelley, and AirGroup Husqvarna’s Ryder Lafferty. This was RORR’s first time putting on the event which consisted of four different races; with each race getting more difficult. On Saturday, riders competed in two separate one hour events narrowing the field down for Sunday where the riders did two laps in the morning which took roughly an hour and a half.
For the main event, they had a start where 50 riders ran to their bikes at the same time setting off for 2.5 laps which added up to 29 miles of RORR’s toughest trail.
Saturday’s races were extremely muddy with heavy rain during the morning. Ryder Lafferty, Tegan Temple, New England’s Ben Kelley, Cory Buttrick, and Jesse Groemm distinguished themselves as potential winners of the main event early on. Tennessee native, Mike Brown, lingered in the top ten range appearing as if he was conserving his energy for Sunday’s event. Butrrick won the first moto while Ben Kelley took a dominant win in the second moto.
New England’s Ben Kelley continues to turn heads and will attend this year’s Six Days in Slovakia.
Sunday morning, riders raced on 18 miles of trail to determine the starting order for the main race in the afternoon which would ultimately decide who would take home the $3500 overall reward, part of a $10,000 purse.
Ryder Lafferty took the win in the first moto on Sunday, setting himself up for a strong afternoon. In the final event, riders ran to their bikes, started their bikes and headed for the woods. Cory Buttrick got the jump taking the holeshot with Tegan Temple in hot pursuit. At the end of the first lap, Jesse Groemm took a 30 second lead with Tegan Temple in second, Ryder Lafferty in third, and Chris Douglas in fourth. Groemm continued to lead before Temple caught and passed him. Both battled before Temple stretched his lead further.
Roughly halfway through, Groemm snapped his left foot peg off and rode the remainder of the race without it. Kelley charged late catching and passing Groemm for second place. At the finish, Temple took the first Tough Like RORR overall win with Ben Kelley and Stephen Edmondson in second and third place, respectively. Mark Heresco took fourth and Jesse Groemm took fifth overall after running out of gas miles before the finish.
